The group was give a graffiti workshop on how to create graffiti artwork and how to use spray paints efficiently.

Session 01: Field Trip + Volunteering

Day 1
We walked from studio to visit Hulme Garden Centre where we were able to get an understanding of the project and develop ideas of how we could promote eco gardening.

ON DAY 8 WE WERE COMPLETED WITH OUR 3D INSTALLATIONS AND DECORATING THE PLANT FOR HOME GARDENING

On Day 7 we started the infograghics by cutting out the stencils of a tree.

Day 6 we completed our 3D installation

Final day of events. Following the public engagement at Stevenson Square we returned the installation to be situated permanently at Hulme Community Garden Centre.

Day 10 Afternoon
Informing the public about green issues and encouraging urban gardening by giving away sunflowers, nasturtium and french marigold.

Day 10 Morning
Installation workshop is moved to our site; Stevenson Square and ready to be engaged with the public.

Public engagement- encouraging people to do home gardening, giving out the plants...

After two hours nearly all the flowers have been picked by curious visitors. Mission accomplished!

The best part of the project is to see that all our efforts paid off. People enjoyed the whole idea of taking a flower home and appreciated the 3D installation.

The flowers and the seeds are ready to be grabbed!

on Day 5 we went to Hulme community gardens and started our work for the 3D installation

We went to the University Of Manchester's model shop to discuss the connections for the 3D installation.

Last day of off-site installation: Preparing the plant pots for the public engagement activity.

Day 4 Morning
Each group presented their proposal to our collaborator Helene at Hulme Garden Centre. She then gave us feedback and we incorporated two design ideas to create a final design.

Installation is finished and ready for on site engagement with the public.

Day3
Each group presented their proposal to our event leaders who gave us feedback on how to finalise our design in ready for our presentation to our collaborator Helene.

Day 5
Installation at Hulme Garden Centre. Deconstruction and repairing of wooden palettes.

Day 6
Recycled MDF boards cut on band saw for shelving.

Day 8
Donated glass milk bottles and jars were drilled with a small hole for drainage and each filled with compost and a plant.

Day 8 Afternoon
Paper templates were used to create graffiti info-graphic designs onto the installation, using techniques TJ (Graphic Artist) taught us previously.

Day 7
Construction of the installation at Hulme Garden Centre.

DAY 01: 'Get introduced!' For the first day of our events, we had a field trip to the Hulme community garden. We met Helen (one of the trust member of the garden) to get some knowledge about garden and its clients. With a brief introduction on how she works we were also enriched with the heritage and importance of plants in daily lives. At the later day, we helped Helen in one of her tasks and learnt some basics of plantation.

Third day of off-site installation: Cutting the spray paint stencils

The miserable weather finally clears out. The installation is up and standing, looking sturdy and ready for final touches.

Used spare planks from the broken pallets to create shelves for our installation. Done with the generic structure, we are on schedule and looking to paint our installation soon.

Before we began to build the installation, a small group of us visited the UoM workshop to get advice on construction.

Proposals for street art installation were presented to Helen. She was giving her suggestions and thoughts about the works.

Constructive criticism by the collaborator that leads to the finalization of the design_0605

Manual labour at its finest. Covering a side of a pallet by nailing down planks, however the wood was very tough to nail and saw through, making our job significantly harder.

Construction begins. Using basic tools such as saws and hammers, we dissembled broken pallets and used the planks to fill in gaps on the base pallets. This creates a flat surface for us to spray paint onto in the future.

Day 2 Morning
Street Art Workshop given by TJ (Graphic Artist) on techniques using spray paint.

Upon speaking with a UoM workshop technician, we became clearer on how we would construct the installation. We started designating jobs for people to do during the construction days, just so we work as productively as possible in our given time frame.

After presenting to our collaborator, Helen, discussions commenced amongst the 4 groups in coming up with a final design. We decided to connect interesting ideas from all groups into a single design.

The design has been chosen. We are ready to discuss the building process.

D1: Walking to the workplace

Visiting the site which is in front of Fred Aldous- where we going to place our 3D installation.

Given a tour about plantations by Ms Helen in Hulme Garden Community Centre. We were amazed some garden flowers that are good enough to eat :)

Got to grips with a variety of street art techniques, creating stencils and playing with colours.

A detailed session on how to control and use spray paint. The demonstrator showed us a few effective technics on how to spray paint on wood.

//TOUR & HELP
We went to the Hulme Community Garden Centre for a little 'Tour & Help' session and also to listen to a talk on home gardening. Among the community projects and installation that was located in the garden there was one that caught my eye that was the straw cottage (picture above). The interior walls were made out of mashed straw while the exterior was wood.
