Day four:
After going through all sorts of ideas, from a purse which can turn into a carpet, to big hats which cover the whole body, we've decided to produce an umbrella chair and a big skirt which is, in fact, a tent.

Day three:
On our third meeting we went to Grumpy, where we have looked through all sorts of recycled materials and decided which ones would be the best for our wearable shelter. It was a fun day, as we also had the opportunity to play with the materials and create test models.

Day two:
I found the meeting with Dr. Annie Shaw truly inspiring, as she told us about her background and how she got to work in the field of fashion. She listened to our ideas and she helped us with our design, by giving us advice regarding the materials and different techniques for making clothes.

Continuing on the research conducted, we decided we wanted to make better use of the car park space whilst finding ways to deal with Chinatown's huge amount of food waste that is produced daily. The resultant idea is to create A new York "High Line" style raised platform garden which will be bedded with compost created from the food waste.

Investigating Manchester's Chinatown we concluded that it is a badly organised space. It is in a prime location in the centre of the city yet in the middle of Chinatown, there is a car park. Furthermore. This is a serious waste of public space and could be put to much greater use.

The net which we will use for hanging the hats from the church was tested on the 4th floor. Using the large space we tested the hats and worked out key points and locations for the big fit at the end of the week.

Writing the 500 words gave me an interesting insight into modern Chinese urbanism and the the problems it faces with its vast expanse of growth and wealth making. Furthermore it showed that China unlike most industrialised nations is still changing meaning it can adapt to modern day phenomena such as global warming when well established infrastructures in the Western world is very unflexible to change.

DAY 01: 'Get introduced!' For the first day of our events, we had a field trip to the Hulme community garden. We met Helen (one of the trust member of the garden) to get some knowledge about garden and its clients. With a brief introduction on how she works we were also enriched with the heritage and importance of plants in daily lives. At the later day, we helped Helen in one of her tasks and learnt some basics of plantation.

Those of us in the intervention team had met up to start building the structure. The shape is derived mainly from Leonardo Da Vinci's Arch which is a structurally stable way to design an arch. It was built around the tree in the open space in Chatham because the location of the final placement also changed. It was tied down with rope to the base of the tree for support, a covering of planks to control sunlight and hang the mushrooms from, and it also has benches/steps on either side for relaxing or getting to hard to reach places.

2/.
The whole day was about understanding the process of economically growing mushrooms and the resourcefulness in local waste. We had a choice of pink, blue and brown oyster mushrooms, which could easily grow in a slightly damp container filled with coffee grounds. We all participated in the planting and the sense of community and doing activities together was enjoyable, which I feel helped us gain ideas about the design of the intervention.

1/.
We started this project by working in groups of four and coming up with ideas of how we could use stackable plastic crates, that some local businesses offered to lend us, into an intervention that we could grow mushrooms and place in All Saints park. We all worked on this large roll of paper, and then would come to an agreement and pick the best idea. Our groups had several suggestions, and one of mine was to create an organic tree-like structure where we can hang the mushroom planters from.

08.05.14 : Den Building Day
The outcome of the children's hardwork. Their very own DenCity. They build the walls, roof and base out of cardboard materials. They also provide a proper entrance, window openings and a TV set for their den. It was very interestin to witness the children's capabilities in building the den out of materials which need alterings in order for it to work best. The outcomes of all four dens were beyond our imagination. I personally was really impressed.

Each children had their own task/scope of work as discussed with their group. They explore ways to construct from the base towards covering the spaces inside their den. They took their assigned responsibilities really well and were very satisfied with the outcome at the end. The children even highlighted about achieving the aim of having all seven of them to fit inside the den in order to protect themselves from the alien attack.
