After touring the kids around the school we showed them the Alien Story we came up. We though that this story would be a good way to engage the kids more with our master plan of the den making process. In the end the kids drew up some really good designs and most importantly, they really had fun with it too.

Session 2 // Collecting Methodically
The event split into smaller groups with the intention to focus their 'Big Data' research on a specific area of interest. Our smaller group therefore decided to focus on the 'distribution of age' along the corridor and so to see the density of each age group.
After receiving a CAD drawing of the areas to investigate, we began by investigating 2011 census information and divided the 'corridor boundary' into electoral wards used in the census. From this, we were able to calculate the ward population and the amount of people in each age group for the ward.

First sesstion
On 30th April we had our first meeting for event 24 For Sale. We were given the first task that was to locate a neighbourhood within Manchester, and to find out what makes it a good neighbourhood.
The site I have chosen was Hulme Park, located in Hulme, Manchester. The park provided path for jogging and cycling, and there were facilities for skating and stretching. Their was also a playground which was well used by children either living or studying nearby. The park was easily accessed by car and by foot, as it was bounded by roads.

We meet the kids on day 3, and toured them around Manchester School of Art. Although our hopes were to impress them with our architecture models, they diminished the idea of architecture as soon as we stepped foot into the fashion students workspace. Some of the girls fell in love with the idea of coming to Manchester and other were just having fun playing.
Posted 12 May 2014 10:37
It was interesting to see how the children transformed their diagrams into reality and how they used their creativity to represent different materials.

Session 1 // Big Data
Beginning with a talk from Ulysses Sengupta, the group were introduced to 'Big Data', methodologies of collection and the application it can have for the future of architecture. The main idea was that a piece of architecture can only affect a change within a community, so long as the community's 'Big Data' is taken into consideration prior to design.

day 5
we started off with model making.setting hola loops and making the the structure out of it by attaching strings. after making the basic structure we sewed the cloth over it.
Posted 12 May 2014 00:00
we experimented first by making test models to test out how the structure would stand using top of plastic cup rings and strings.
Posted 11 May 2014 23:57
day 3
we visited grumpys which was basically a workshop which provided recycled materials as well as a station for children to experiment with different kinds of materials and built their own structures.we managaed to find very useful materials for our test models and models .

Day 4: We presented in groups today about some analysis on Sale community and finding some presidents that are related to the constraints and opportunities of Sale Community based on our topic "Growth and Development". After the presentation we were given a chance to find an area in Sale and started to transfer some opportunities that were seen in our presidents to the area. The president that we chose were the De Pijp in Amsterdam.
Posted 11 May 2014 23:51
Day 3: We had some lectures with Simon and Ellen about neighbourhoods in different parts of the world and then we started to discuss in groups about our feelings on pictures of different neighbourhoods and analyse the areas based on the topic "Growth and Development".
Posted 11 May 2014 23:43
second meeting we had Dr Anne Shaw as our our lecturer guest who really inspired her with her talks about how fashion industry and architecture can combine to produce amazing forms and structures
Posted 11 May 2014 23:40
Day 2: In session 2 we went on a visit to the Sale Community. We walked around the neighbourhood and got some information about the neighbourhood there during the site visit. After the site visit we started our presentation on task one.
Posted 11 May 2014 23:38
Day 1: The first task of our event is to find a neighbourhood and analyse whether the area is a good neighbourhood in terms of different of different aspect. I took a site visit of the Hulme park and analyse it with the relationship between landscape and architecture, and also its accessibility.

Day 1 / First meeting and briefing with the group. We were then paired into groups of two and asked to generate and share initial ideas.
Posted 11 May 2014 22:37
Working in groups to consolidate ideas into two final designs that we could present to the client. An integrated design in which the pizza oven workspace and seating were combine and a non integrated design in which all elements were separate.
Posted 11 May 2014 22:33
A design developed based upon a concept discussed in a group of four after meeting with the client. One of the several developed and presented to the group as initial ideas for the design of the pizza oven.
Posted 11 May 2014 22:26
First meeting with the client on site at Hulme Community Garden to discuss their requirements for the project. They wanted a curvy, organic structure that included other natural materials that could be found on site to create tactile surfaces. The structure should have seating for up to 15 people, sufficient counter top space and be able to accommodate children.
Posted 11 May 2014 22:18
1// Collecting the data comparing the two universities was taken from various websites and spreadsheets from departments from around the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan. We narrowed the comparisons down to 6 courses and chose which data we wanted to show and if it would be beneficial for the app/ students.
Posted 11 May 2014 22:07
2000 bricks donated by Ibstock, delivered on site to be used in the construction of the pizza oven. Upon inspection it was found the bricks contained groves that could be engineered to create a pattern when they are laid. The aesthetic of the brick will make the structure look more natural on the site.

Day 4: On day 4 we reviewed task 2. For task 2 I had to analyse 2 further neighbourhoods. The one pictured above is Hammaby Sjostad in Stockholm. The Goal of the area was to halve the environmental impact compared to a typical development built in the 1990s, to achieve this they focussed on creating great public transportation links to stop people using their cars. The whole neighbourhood is centred around the main transit corridors creating a focus for activity and commerce.
Posted 11 May 2014 21:00
Day 3: In our third session we looked into analysing different neighbourhoods around Europe. The picture I have included is of Poundbury in Dorchester. In Poundbury there is a small density and people are attracted to it because it is a lot cheaper than London. Poundbury has facilities so that you can work and live there and not have to commute. But, similar to Sale there is a lot of leftover, unused space.

Day 2: Site visit to Sale. In Sale we saw a huge amount of wasted green space and car parks going completely unused that we could experiment with.
Posted 11 May 2014 20:46
Day 1:We were asked to analyse a neighbourhood in Manchester. I chose Fallowfield because I found it hard to analyse a neighbourhood without actually living or spending much time in it. I concluded Fallowfield had great facilities for what was needed in the area, but was not a good neighbourhood in the sense that different types of people such as students and families were kept quite seperate.

Having made 4000 hats in 2 days, we spent the rest of the week making threads of hats according to the layered plan we had created. After a while we got quite fast at it, and having made 90 threads on wednesday, we managed to step it up to 300 threads on thursday, and were able to finish all 380 threads for the screen before the weekend. Next week: clouds of hats, same system, hopefully a few less hats!
