Day 4 - 06/05/14
Narrative.
There are many ways to depict a space. After exploring the medium of urban-sketching and filming, we were taught of the art of comic book-making.
Posted 8 May 2014 22:11
By using micro-modelling and guerrilla gardening in this session around the All Saint’s Park we were able to appreciate spaces on a small scale and enjoy the reactions of those who noticed the miniature scenes we had created.
Posted 8 May 2014 22:08
Day 4 - 06/05/14
Narrative.
We spent the morning exploring through Northern Quarter to get ideas for our story-based narrative. In studio, we were introduced to Archontia Manolakelli of the Manchester University Comic Collective where we explored our narratives in a form of a comic.

Posted 8 May 2014 21:47
Day three, our crew revisited four spaces that we were the most drawn to the previous day, and then expanded on our interpretation of them; even imposing narratives onto them. This was my favourite, 'The Portal'.

Filming
After inspired by a session of watching architectural films, we went to the city centre to film our own short film.
Posted 8 May 2014 21:32
It helped to create a 'Rothuizen' style image in order to analyse the site in a way in which bought together the experience from the site along with possibilities and limitations. It is focussed more on the community centre and the area surrounding as the space is the most thought about in the community.
Posted 8 May 2014 21:27
Day two, we set out to explore the urban landscape; we found ourselves naturally gravitate toward spaces filled with energy. Some spaces none of us had ever noticed before, yet we'd had crossed them many times in the past.
Posted 8 May 2014 21:25
After visiting the site, some analysis and research was necessary to help understand the site and the possibilities it holds. The Urban Hybrid Housing Project is one that looks at cheap housing that focusses on pedestrianised areas with green spaces while also being affordable.
Posted 8 May 2014 21:25
Day 4 - Experimented with guerrilla gardening techniques, creating tiny scenes in random locations across the MMU campus.

First day, everybody settled into their designated pirate crews, and derived their group ethos and flag. This is my sketch of the fierce Manchester queen bee, which morphed into the flag for our crew.
Posted 8 May 2014 20:33
Day 4: We further developed and finalised our design. We began to render the sketch-up model, finish the AutoCAD drawings for next the session and finish of the visuals and sketches to be inserted in the two panels.

As our narrative connects all the individual sites together, we decided that our final map is going to be a group piece. The most important events of the narrative will be represented by pop-up images. Looking for inspiration…

Sale West features an abundance of large landscaping areas with little to no functionality and a plethora of car parks that exceed the number spaces needed to facilitate the needs of the inhabitants. The area desperately needs some intervention to help provide some necessary functionality to the vast space they have.

DAY6
.
Raining since the morning.
However, it could not stop us making our intervention!
Our group of constructing the design started to build the design with broken down pallets from the previous day.
People brought and borrowed tool and equipment and started to assemble.
Couple of hours late, it finally showed as a final form.
What is left is just hanging the mushroom for the eventday!

When questioning the principles that form a good neighbourhood, the idea of a centralised location lends itself well into the argument. Grove Village, although relatively small, seems to have incorporated this idea well in the community.
Posted 8 May 2014 18:34
The group reminisce as Tiffany points out just how small the pallet structure was a mere few days ago. A very emotional moment.

Day 3: Presentations. The groups presented their proposals to our collaborator (Transport for Greater Manchester). Our collaborators were impressed with the design disciplines behind each proposal, while providing feedback and useful information on health and safety issues concerning designing in public spaces, and especially train and tram stations.
